If you’re looking for delicious, healthy gourmet food prepared with natural ingredients then Jones the Grocer is the place for you. How something can taste so delightful and healthy at the same time is beyond us. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city lies a contemporary and vibrant cafe – decorated with food displays of tasty sandwiches and heavenly desserts, and various gourmet goods which can be bought such as cheese, delicacies, and artisanal condiments.
The menu is enticing, with options varying from sandwiches to an Australian wagyu cottage pie. To begin with, we order the Smoked Tomato Soup with whipped burrata and basil oil. The sweet tomatoes are nicely offset with soft and creamy burrata, while the basil oil rounds up the flavors of the components in this dish.
Under the comical menu heading of lettuce be friends, soups and salads we order a delicious and filling salad of yuzu marinated and roasted pumpkin, grilled chicken, feta cheese, sun-dried tomato and rocket salad. Needless to say, the chicken breast was grilled to perfection with a peppery seasoning. But what stood out about this dish was how each ingredient played a vital role in making this dish taste delicious – the pumpkin is sweet and fulfilling, the feta cheese is salty and adds a slightly grainy textural element, and the sun-dried tomatoes have an intense sweet-tart flavor.
From the sandwiches, or as its stated in the menu another one bites the crust sandwiches, is the Roast Chicken and Avocado sandwich with roasted garlic aioli and crispy beef bacon on multigrain bread. The sandwiches are served with delightfully crispy truffle parmesan fries which are fried in truffle oil and are dressed with a truffle aioli.
The main event starts with the Slow-cooked Australian Wagyu Cottage Pie, which is a Jones the Grocer classic. The ultimate comfort food of quality beef mince in a flavorful tomato based sauce is topped with potato mash, cave-aged Cheddar and Parmesan crust.
The second main meal is the Jones Wagyu Burger. Freshly minced and marinated wagyu patty is grilled to juicy perfection and served with smoked beef bacon, mixed leaf salad, and cheddar cheese in a soft sesame brioche bun. Alongside this are served sweet potato fries and bois boudran sauce.
To wrap up our meal, we ordered three desserts (which we were repeatedly reminded are all gluten free). The first was the Chocolate Duo Cheesecake, the second was a Vairhona Jivara Chocolate Eclair, and the third and last an Australian original Lamington. The Lamington was by far the favored dessert – with a soft and moist sponge cake enameled with chocolate and desiccated coconut.
We definitely left our table feeling satisfied and content (and most certainly rounder) with our meal. We will definitely be coming back for more. Who doesn’t like a scrumptious healthy meal?
